spam via @ubuntu.com
December 18, 2007
Like Jeff Bailey I noticed this fall that my @ubuntu.com email address is getting an insane amount of spam. In a quick calculation I did recently, it seems that over 75% of the spam I receive are coming from that email address, with the rest coming from various other email addresses (some quite old) that forward to my gmail account. Now it isn’t really a problem since the spam filtering at Google ends up moving the large majority of these spams away from my inbox automatically, but still it seems to be a total waste of resources, especially for Canonical, to deliver to me all these useless emails.
I have been debating to request to get rid of my @ubuntu.com address since I rarely use it nowadays, but that would be shame to admit defeat in face of spammers, and to lose one of the benefit of being an Ubuntu Member. But it is a waste of energy and resources that I’m sure Canonical could spend on more useful things. Maybe an @ubuntu.com email address shouldn’t be an automatic benefit received by all Ubuntu members (348 of us according to Launchpad), but something they each could request only if they really want one.

That is a good idea about handing out email addresses to those who only want one.
I just got a message from Google the other day that my available space was less than 1% or some garbage and I had to go in and delete all of the spam. And like all of you, it was the same, @ubuntu.com. I don’t get much to @kubuntu.org though, which is nice, however I have that @ubuntu.com email address as well.

What a childish way to communicate a problem to Canonical…

I’ve pointed my ubuntu.com alias to Gmail (which I don’t use for my normal email), so Google can filter all of that out for me.

How about all spam on the ubuntu planet itself? “Help me win a $f00″ is okay when $foo runs Ubuntu now?

Just tell Canonical (by mail, or file a bug) to install some blacklist filters or something to stop their servers from sending spam.
